The 77K CSO is a new frequency standard under development at JPL to achieve frequency stability in the 10-13 to 10-14 range in a compact and inexpensive package. The 77K CSO incorporates a mechanically compensated whispering gallery mode sapphire resonator cooled by liquid nitrogen to provide a capability between that of the very best quartz oscillators and the more expensive liquid-helium temperature oscillators such as the SCMO or the 10K CSO.
