Hydrogen masers developed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory have been in the Deep Space Network since 1977. Its stability is equivalent to the gain or loss of 1 second in 30 million years. With use of this standard, a spacecraft navigating to Jupiter could come within 37 kilometers (23 miles) of its aiming point.
