Photonic research at JPL provides new capabilities for the distribution, conversion and generation of ultra-stable rf and microwave signals. These capabilities are essential to the Deep Space Network (DSN), NASA's worldwide antenna and communications system for deep-space missions. Advanced photonic technologies include:

• Optical fiber with low thermal variability which now replaces coaxial wire to distribute ultra-stable reference radio frequencies to the DSN antenna sites.
• An "antenna remoting" experiment now underway to demonstrate the direct transmission of amplified microwave signals from the antenna to the DSN station via optical fiber without any downconversion. This is not possible with present technology without degrading the stability of the signals, a fact that requires the additional step of ultra-stable frequency distribution to – and downconversion of the signal at – the antenna sites.
• Photonic frequency conversion that can entirely eliminate the need for an external downconverter.
• An OptoElectronic Oscillator (OEO) that promises ultra-high stability in a small, room temperature package that is suitable for either space or ground based applications.
