Ultra Stable Frequency Distributon
Frequency
Standards Laboratory
- A major milestone was the introduction of fiber optics
into the DSN by the Time and Frequency Systems Research Group. High fidelity
analog fiber optic links with ultra low phase noise and high stability
were developed at JPL in response to the need for a means to distribute
ultrastable frequency reference signals from the control centers to the
antenna sites. Deployment of these fiber optic links enabled each antenna
site to have a reference signal generated by an atomic frequency standard.
If atomic frequency standards were installed in each antenna the cost would
have been prohibitive at more than $1M per station. With these high performance
fiber optic links the cost was about $100K per antenna site.
